The Madness of Hope

What Are You Talking About?

Once upon a time there were two men walking along a road en route to a village called Emmaus. They were disheartened because their leader and friend had been killed. As they were discussing the events that had occurred, Jesus began walking alongside them and said, “What are you talking about?” Just as Jesus heard their conversation, He also hears every discussion we have. If we think of him at our dinner table, listening to our phone calls or present during coffee with friends, would it make any difference what we talk about? Are our conversations full of criticism and gossip or do we encourage one another and build others up? And, just as He knew the concerns of the two on the road to Emmaus, so Jesus knows our hurts, worries and disappointments. Before we speak, He is aware of the state of our heart and He knows that ‘out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.’ (Matthew 12:34) So today, let’s give him the hurts and negativity of our hearts. Leave it there with Him. Then think on that which is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8-9). Remember, today, that Jesus is walking with you.
