The Madness of Hope

Book of Treasures

Last night my dad called me to his bedroom where he was reading, preparing to retire for the night. He held a book, Great Expectations, which he had chosen from the bookshelf.

Upon opening the old red cover, instead of pages, we saw a plastic cover. Under the cover were compartments full of fine jewelry; gold with diamonds and rubies.

Two years ago we bought this house from an elderly lady who had Alzheimer’s and had moved to a nursing home. She has now passed away. Obviously she had carefully hidden away her best jewelry to ensure no one would find it and, given her mental state, had forgotten where she hid her treasure. For some reason, when we bought the house, the book cases were left full of books, most of which I took to the Goodwill. This book could have easily been thrown out.

I know another book that holds great value and is often discarded and forgotten about. Dust accumulates on the cover and the wisdom never learned. Much of the world is not even aware of the treasure carefully recorded on each thin page.

Yet many of us are do know the eternal promises and commands written inside and we still fail to study its life changing pages.

After we found this book, I begin to wonder if the lady had hidden treasures in other place and I began to search the dark spaces under cabinet drawers and in the attic. Isn’t that so like us? We will search everywhere to find worth, wealth and identify when all we need is written in the Book of Life.

I plan to take the jewelry to someone who can tell me its worth. The other book is priceless
